BAK Industries 90301 BakBox Tool Box for Ford F150 Review

I installed the Bakbox to store miscellaneous items and an auxilliary deep-cycle battery charged off of the main truck alternator. The Bakflip site says the box can hold 400 lbs evenly distributed; I believe the Amazon site says 150 lbs. Either way, did not expect problems holding the 50 lb battery. The main design problem is that the Bakbox sides are formed sheet metal with narrow tabs that fit into the Bakflip cover (F1 in my case)channels. There is only a small surface of the sheet metal in the cover mount channel to hold all of the weight. When any significant weight is added to the box, the sheet metal sides deform slightly, pulling the tabs out of the channel and the box falls to the floor of the truckbed... unacceptable. After several adjustments that failed to work, I drilled four holes and installed bolts through the sheet metal and into the Bakflip mount rail (carefully avoiding the water drain channel). This prevents the sheet metal mounts from deforming and holds the box securely in place. A road trip into Mexico confirmed this setup. Given Bakflip's excellent design and construction, I think they could engineer this Bakbox much better.. the product is a great idea, not well executed.

Mated this up with my k1500 suburban.. You will need a drill to elongate the the required 2 holes, one each side... I also recommend spraying the frame of your vehicle with a can of undercoat spray for a clean looking install. I also recommend an air ride kit of some sort. Pulling any kind of weight will put strain on U joints if not level and addition strain on tranny. I towed 9,200 lbs.. cross country... Strongly not recommended so please watch your weight limit, or you'll brake something for sure.......

BAK Industries 35309 BakFlip HD All Metal Tonneau Bed Cover Review

After much research, reviews and recommendations for Truck bed Tonneaus -- I chose to install the Bak Industries BakFlip on my
2010 Ford 150. The videos on BakFlip's website were a great selling point for BakFlip and also provide easy to follow video
instructions. The unit arrived in perfect condition as it was well packaged.

The installation was as easy as the video suggested. It took about 15 minutes to do the installation of the rails and bed cover. The drain lines were a little more time consumming as I had to drill out openings in the truck drain plugs and fit elbow joints to get the proper slope from the rail drain fitting. The drain hoses included with the unit were ok, but I also purchased worm clamps to ensure the lines didn't leak at the rail fitting. I would say that the BakFlip unit works as described in the Amazon's information and the BakFlip web site (it's reasonably Weather tight but NOT water proof).

Overall I'm very pleased with the BakFlip Tonneau cover -- but that doesn't mean the're aren't any "shortcomings" ? I would say that the manufacturing quality control is not as good as depicted on BakFlip's web site. Initially the unit had two leaky areas.

1) The rail drain fitting on the right side leaked at the joint -- I had to remove the fitting, add Teflon tape and reinstall
to fix the leak.

2) Another area was at the right rear hinge joint just near the truck wheel well. I had to trim some excess rubber that was preventing a snug fit at the rail and added a very small blip of silicone caulking. This helped stem the leak but not completely (still leaked about an annoying ounce or two during a rain storm).

After 3 months of useage and weather exposure leak has stopped -- I'm guessing that the rubber sealings must have expanded and contracted and finally sealed themselves ? I recently took my truck to the power wash center and after a good scubbing and power wash down (to remove road salts, etc.) -- the bed was perfectly dry under the BakFlip Tonneau ! I've also noticed small bits of aluminum shavings,(some loose and some embedded in the rubber hinge seals) probably from the manufacturing process -- this can't help but hinder the water resistance of the seals ?

I would have given the product 5 stars if it weren't for these minor problems. The BakFlip Tonneau complements the appearance
of the truck and has drawn several comments. It fuctions as described in giving an easily accessable yet reasonbly secure cover
on the truck bed. Each folding section section has it's own lockdown and feels solid. It's a big improvement over the previous
tonneau roll up "tarp" cover on my previous truck in both appearance and security. However nothing is totally secure, and I'm
sure that with a large screwdriver or crowbar I could overcome the cover locks. It's really only secure for "honest" folks.
