I received my TruXport Rollup Tonneau Cover for my 2008 Tundra standard bed through Amazon and sold through a company called 'Truck and Wench' ($292 including shipping). The unit, arrived in less than 5 business days as promised.
I'll admit (probably like most of you) the number and variety of truck bed covers these days is enough to make your head spin. And if the variety doesn't make you pause, the range of prices (some over a thousand dollars) will certainly do it. So when the 7' box arrived by UPS, I was wondering if I had just purchased a gimmicky piece of garbage or something that would really do the job.
Well, first of all, the materials themselves seem to be good quality. The rail clamps (like the extruded rails themselves) are heavy duty aluminum. The vinyl fabric is of medium weight. I read one review that seemed to be disappointed in that, but frankly I think the cover would be too bulky to roll up easily if the material was much heavier or stiffer. I certainly don't think it will be a problem, as I have no intention of using mine as a trampoline. When the cover is rolled out and the end snapped down in place the top surface was clean and smooth with a nice professional look.
When I read the cover had hook and latch fasteners (Velcro) along the edge, I had some doubts. However, after seeing how the fastener material is used, I have a much better feeling it is the right choice (and certainly better than using snaps, which have a tendency to be finicky, especially over time or in cold weather). First of all, this ain't your usual lightweight velcro - it's industrial grade and should hold up well, even in the elements. Second, the velco is NOT a 'tension' member to hold the cover tight. (more about that later) It's job is entirely to keep out the elements along the two side. The top of the TruXport rails stick up about 1-1/2" above the sides of your truck bed. That's not by accident. The outer sides of the rails are angled down at about 45 degrees. When the cover is rolled out and snapped down taut, the side edges of the cover (with half the velcro attached) stick out straight above the beveled outer sides of the rails (which have the other half of the velcro). Once the cover is snapped down, simply walk down the side of your truck and fold down the edge of the vinyl cover to mate up the velcro halves. Any rain or dust which might roll off the top of your cover goes 'downhill' past the beleveled edge. And since since water doesn't flow uphill, there is little chance of it somehow wicking or seeping under the side edges of the cover. (Smart!)
The tautness of the cover comes entirely from the clever tension mechanism at the end of each rail (at the tailgate) as well as the handful of aluminum tubes which are sewn into the bottom side of the cover material. The tubes seem to be there as secondary support for the fabric - primarily to keep the cover from sagging when there is no tension on the fabric (rolling it in or out) or to help with any wind/rain loads. The presence of the aluminum tubes aren't even noticeable when the cover is snapped down in place - something I appreciated, since some soft bed covers have distinctive 'ridges' where the structural supports are. The TruXport cover was completely smooth all the way across.
Some members have mentioned needing to make several adjustments to the cover's tension due to weather. I can't comment on that yet as I haven't had the unit long enough to see it under large swings in temperature (the beauty of living is Seattle). However I suspect the material would tend to stabilize over time. In addition, the tension adjustment mechanism on the TruXport could not be easier - just a thumbwheel nut on each end you can adjust by hand.
Ok, I've been bragging this whole time about the TruXport and what a good product I think it is (especially for the price). Time will tell how well it will hold up years down the road, but I've got a good gut feeling about that and the unit's Five Year limited warranty.
The only reason I didn't rate the cover a full FIVE Stars was simply because of the installation. You've read the ads: "One person can install in 20 minutes!". Could I install it in 20 minutes by myself? Perhaps now I could (the second time around), but no way the first time through and have it fit weathertight and true. (oh, and by the way, I've got a mechanical engineering degree working for Boeing!) You can have the best materials in the world but if they aren't installed carefully and properly, your product simply won't be worth the money. That's the caution I would give anyone who buys this unit...TAKE YOUR TIME! TruXport's installation instruction sheets are 'adequate' to understand how the mechanism fits on your truck. What they DON'T emphasize is the necessity to check and cross-check the positioning of the rails on the truck - which is so essential. Are they perfectly aligned? Are they parallel? Do the foam seals hit at the right places on your truck? All of these details make the difference between a great cover and one you are grumbling about after the first good rainstorm. The clamps that hold down the rails themselves require a 1/2" wrench (preferably a ratchet type)to tighten down - the only tool you need for the whole installation. If you have a set of large padded C-clamps they can be helpful to temporarily hold the rails in place while you are fine-tuning their final positions.
Final judgment - would I buy my Truxport roll-up cover again? In a heartbeat. But at least this time I'd be more careful upfront in getting it installed right the FIRST time through.
