I purchased these two crossbars and had them installed at my VW dealer. They would only install OEM parts, and I wanted to be sure to get a good fit, proper installation, etc. Fine. So far so good.

The main problem I have with the crossbars is that the rubber gasket on the top of the bar is not cut to the right length. This causes the end caps (which cover the sockets for tensioning the feet and getting a good fit to the roof) to occasionally fall loose. They do not fall off, yet. After years of having the crossbars, though, it seems like only a matter of time before the right set of conditions will have the end caps fall off. This is not a problem at all four locations, as the gasket is the proper length on one of the two crossbars. It seems as though the end caps are designed to have a press fit, instead of a positive locking/retaining feature.

Volkswagen clearly spent a lot of time designing other aspects of my Golf TDI; it would have been nice for them to put some more time and attention to detail into the crossbars. I would have expected better quality from VW.

Pros: Functions as intended - I have a Yakima rack mounted to the crossbars
Cons: Quality lower than expected, end caps fall off

Additional comments: I have a TDI, which I got in part for fuel efficiency. These crossbars will definitely effect your mileage. The TDI is also a very quiet auto, the crossbars (as a function of shape and height from the roof) will give you more resistance and noise. If you have a sunroof (as I do), this will obviously be more noticeable with the sunroof open.
