BMW OEM X1 Base Support System Review

I installed this on my BMW X1 today and used to it carry a kayak. The instructions are clear and the rack is very solid once installed. The spacing constraints were easy enough to follow. The price was very good compared to other alternatives. And the cross bars are elliptical for better aerodynamics. The only problem is with the locking mechanism. The key is a little hard to insert, even when I lubricated the lock. Also, it was not possible for me alone to lock each cover plate. I had to have my wife turn the key while I very firmly gripped the cover with the locking mechanism against the clamping mechanism with both hands. The instructions say that not much force is required, but this is not correct. This was why I rated it 4 stars instead of 5.
