I always owned hatchbacks and wagons and I always purchased cargo covers for all my previous cars, so I bought this one... however I found I don't use it much. In the past I purchased the cover for privacy, so people can't see what is in my cargo area. But CRV has such nicely tinted windows that privacy is not an issue. No one can see into the back of the car anyway.

I also purchased a cargo shelf and I find that I use the shelf all the time, as it provides me extra surface because it is rigid. I typically use it in half folded position, which gives me extra surface and gives me complete access to everything in the back without having to open it. And items under the shelf are impossible to see even if someone managed to peer through the tinted glass. If you can own only one - shelve or cover, I would go with the shelf.
