Product Description
Reese part # 50064 is a custom fit fifth wheel hitch bracket kit. It is designed to line up with existing holes in the frame for a simple installation that takes half the time. The 5th wheel brackets include vehicle specific mounting instructions that take the guess work out of where to place the hitch inside the bed. These brackets work in conjunction with rail kit # 58058 and will support Reese, Draw-Tite, Pro Series, and most other brands of fifth wheel hitches.Reese 50064 Fifth Wheel Custom Quick Install Bracket Review
First note that these brackets fit a number of different models so a different truck might be easier/harder.The brackets themselves were very easy to install - maybe 30 min each side. But the reason for the brackets is to have something to bolt the in bed rails to - and that is where there are significant problems. First, on the driver's side, one of the bolts ends up in a location where you cannot see or touch it due to the fuel tank. So on the driver's side you can only connect the front rail with one bolt (the directions and diagram have two bolts being connected to the rail)- I have the other going through the rail and bed but there is no nut on it (not as designed, but I know there is some built in over kill and I will keep and eye on it). The other bolt on that end can only be tightened using a shorty open end wrench. The passengers side is easier and all 4 bolts can be accessed - although the same bolt that can't be seen/touched on the driver's side can also not be seen on the passenger's side. This one took about 5 minutes to get the nut started since I was doing it blind and the space for your fingers is limited and you are going up so gravity is working against you. But before you can get to the rail installation you need to remove the an exhaust heat shield that runs the length of the bed. It is held on by 8 torx head bolts. These are easy to strip and and I eneded up drilling/cutting the heads off of 4. I had to use a ratchet strap to move the exhaust over about 4 inches to access one. And one is directly above the spare tire sub frame - about 1.25 inches clearance - not enough room to get a bit and socket on and unscrew. This one I ended up using a Dremel type cutter on and a chisel and hammer and a lot of cussing. I had originally thought I would just remove the heat shield but it turns out it there is no way to get from between the frame and the bed unless you cut it up which I didn't have the tools for. So I reinstalled using the 4 bolts that had come out clean. Luckily my truck is diesel so I doubt I'll notice any extra rattles. Lastly, the directions tell you to torque all the nuts to specific values. Unfortunately there is no way to fit a torque wrench onto most of the rail mounting nuts.
I installed a similar kit on a 2000 Ford F250 and didn't have any major problems. I know the designers need to work with what the truck manufactures have made and understand the complexities - but there should be a bit more model specific thought put into the design and instructions.
